Frame types
With so many stunning frames to choose from, how do you find that perfect one for you? Check out our summary of the key benefits and watch-outs for different frame types.
Full Rimmed Metal
Benefits:
- Sturdy design
- Will be suited to almost every prescription
- Easily adjusted
- Available in titanium if wanting a lighter option or have allergies to basic metals.
Watch outs:
- Not recommended if you are keen on your sports. Safety first people keep in mind that the nose pad arms on this frame style are not good if you take a knock!
- If your prescription is on the high side, your lens edge could sit outside of the rim, unless you opt for thinned lenses.
Semi-Rimless Metal
Benefits:
- Tend to have a metal frame on the top half of the glasses and none on the lower half. This makes them lighter and look more attractive.
Watch outs:
- Lenses are more exposed and therefore can chip if poorly handled.
- There will need to be a minimum edge thickness to the lens in order to glaze them. This may mean that plus powered lenses are thicker than when glazed into a full frame.
Rimless Metal
Benefits:
- Gives the appearance of no glasses worn.
- Are extremely light
Watch outs:
- Lenses are more exposed and therefore can chip if poorly handled.
- Lenses may be thicker than in full rimmed frames in order to glaze them.
- Difficult to adjust.
Full Rimmed Plastic
Benefits:
- Sturdy design
- Will be suited to virtually any prescription
- Easily adjusted
- Good for hiding thicker lenses from high prescriptions.
Watch outs:
- Generally bolder in design, so not the choice for you if you’re after that no-glasses look.
